The sports segment on local television news used to be the anchor reading sports scores and narrating the highlight clips after the news and weather segments at the end of the newscast.
It’s a whole new ballgame today.
Today’s sports journalists are more than just score readers. They take viewers to the game, up close and personal. They get under the helmets of the athletes to bring fans the human side of the player. They take hours of buzzer beaters, grand slams, quarterback sneaks, and other sports moments, and tie them into an informative and compelling presentation of the world of sports. Local and national. Pro, college, and high school. And some of the special noteworthy moments in between.
In Atlanta, sports were always a big deal in local media, whether the teams were winning or not (mostly not). But in the last few years, Sports news is more prominent in Atlanta video journalism than ever. Recent championship victories by Atlanta United, Georgia Bulldogs, and Atlanta Braves have heightened attention to the local sports scene. Locker room buzz and back office drama with the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks, and other teams have helped to make sports more newsworthy in Atlanta even when the teams are in the offseason.
Atlanta’s TV sports journalism corps is larger than ever, thanks to more news-producing TV stations seeing the value of local sports coverage in an increasingly sports-minded market. Plus, sports team championship runs have sent the Atlanta press outside of the city for Braves World Series, back-to-back Bulldogs championship quests, and the Atlanta Dream’s WNBA Finals bid. Local sports coverage also now extends outside of the news, with sports wrap-up shows (long a presence on local TV) and team-oriented productions over the air as well as streaming, to satisfy the 24-hour sports fan.
Also, the journalists covering sports in Atlanta have never been more diverse. There are more women and people of color anchoring and reporting sports in Atlanta than ever. There’s also a new generation of younger sports journalists entering the market, with outsized knowledge of social media and how to use it to tell stories of the game in ways that weren’t even conceptualized a decade ago.
Atlanta can’t get enough sports content, and today’s local sports journos are ready for the action, mic and camera (and iPad/iPhone) in hand.
And now, here are your Atlanta television sports journalists with the sports…
