Cox Media Group continues to dominate the Atlanta radio market with two of its stations, classic hits WSRV 97.1 The River leading the just-released Eastlan Ratings for August, with News/Talk WSB/WSBB tied for first. These two stations have been tied for first in the ratings all summer long. CMG’s other radio stations in this market, Urban AC WALR and Hot AC WSB FM, came in 5th and 6th place, respectively.
WVEE V-103 landed in 3rd place, the highest-ranking urban station in the market. Urban One’s WAMJ/WUMJ Majic duo landed in 4th place.
Two stations that had a turbulent summer were flat or down this month. Both are Atlanta-based Cumulus Media stations: CHR WWWQ Q997 held steady while Alternative WNNX 99X slipped slightly. Both were impacted by cost-cutting moves at the parent company.
Cumulus’ WKHX was the highest-ranking country station, coming in at #8. Hot AC WSTR Star 94 slipped in the ratings as its musical direction shifted over the summer.
iHeart’s WWPW Power 105.3 continues to underperform since being moved to its current rimshot frequency, coming in at #22. WRDG The Beat, 105.3’s former tenant, is the 9th most popular station in the ratings, slugging it out with other hip hop stations, Urban One’s WHTA Hot 107.9 and the lower-ranked WWSZ Streetz 94.9.
Among sports stations, WZGC 92.9 The Game led WCNN The Fan as live sports began cranking up towards the end of August. Look for ratings gains for both stations as Falcons and Dawgs football starts and the Braves pennant race heats up.
