The Top 30 hits on Hot 97.5 29 years ago today.
Atlanta was the epicenter of a national hip hop revolution, and then two-year-old WHTA Hot 97.5 FM was part of it all.
Launched by Radio One (now Urban One) and led by radio veteran Steve Hedgewood (who now runs Streetz 94.5), WHTA cranked up the rap sounds all day long, not just when the kids came home from school. The station featured such legendary DJ’s as Ryan Cameron, Emperor Searcy, and Chris Lova Lova, or as he is known now, global hip hop star, Ludacris.
After several years of challenging urban radio leader WVEE, the station jumped to the 107.9 frequency in September 2001. Although it now has considerable competition as a source for hip hop in Atlanta (WVEE, WRDG, Streetz, among others), WHTA is still a destination for hot southern hip hop. Comic Rickey Smiley’s nationally syndicated morning show is based at the station, and it simulcasts Fox TV station WAGA’s live audio on its second HD Radio channel.
