Both WSB TV and WANF TV can claim they won big at the Southeastern Emmy Awards last night.
WSB won two of the biggest prizes, Overall Excellence and News Excellence. But crosstown WANF won the most awards of any Atlanta TV station by far… twenty-six prizes. Both stations won team awards for coverage of last year’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention shooting and an ice storm that hit metro Atlanta earlier this year.
WSB won for Best Morning Newscast for coverage of a natural gas explosion and for coverage of a tornado that struck south metro Atlanta last year.
Brendan Keefe, WANF’s investigative reporter, won eight awards, the most of any individual this year. WXIA’s Kaitlyn Ross won three awards. WAGA’s Alex Forbes won for Best Weather Anchor. WXIA/WATL’s Reginald Chatman Jr. won for Best Sports Anchor. His co-worker Molly Oak won for Best Live Reporter, her second consecutive yearly SE Emmy win. WANF’s news producer, Jackie Gold, won in that category.
Among Spanish-language local journalism, Univision 34’s “Noticias 34 Atlanta” won for News Excellence, while competitor Telemundo Atlanta won for Overall Excellence. Univision 34 won an Emmy for its continuing coverage of the deportation of journalist Mario Guevara, while that same station’s Ana Herrera won for Best Reporter.
For sports Emmys, the Atlanta Falcons journalistic team (Jenny Ross, Tori McElhaney, and Austin Hittel) won for “Bijan Robinson: The Art of The Juke”, and Sawyer Benge, Taylor Vismor, Jared Call, and Sophia Pedroso, all Falcons media, won for the team’s Pregame Show.
ANF’s Ballie Burmaster, Joey Rogers, Lee Smith, and Connor Hines won for their Live Sports Program “ANF Gametime: Clean, Old Fashioned Hate.” Atlanta United won the Sports Documentary for “The Son of Kristaiansund: Stian Gregersen’s Journey.”
The now-defunct FanDuel Sports Network won two sports awards, Play-by-Play (Bob Rathbun) and Analyst (Brian Oliver).
Among non-broadcasters, Emory University and the Atlanta History Center won multiple awards for short-form content.
