Lawson, Midcap and Sidney to lead evening expansion
WUPA, CBS Atlanta, is in news expansion mode, approaching its eighth-month anniversary as a network station with a functioning news operation.
On April 13, this Monday, WUPA will launch a new hour of news starting at 5 pm, which will feature newser Sharon Lawson, met Dagmar Midcap, and traffic rep Orelon Sidney. Neither of the three is a newcomer to this market. All three have extensive experience in Atlanta television.
CBS Atlanta has been slowly stepping into the crowded and ultra-competitive pool of news coverage in the Atlanta TV market since its launch last year. WSB, WAGA, WXIA (and its sidecar WATL). WANF (and their sidecar WPCH), Univision 34, Telemundo 47, and WUPA all have active news divisions cranking out copious amounts of content for the number seven Nielsen market in the country.
“We are excited to continue building CBS Atlanta since launching in August of last year,” says station president and GM Tom Canedo. “I’m proud that this team is continuing the CBS tradition of serving our community with content highlighting the stories that inform and inspire us all.”
The CBS-owned and operated station’s addition of more PM drive news is a “meaningful expansion”, according to news director Shawn Hoder. “We’re continuing to grow our programming in a strategic, deliberate way as we build a strong local news offering in the market.”
